As part of the 67th prisoner exchange, 84 individuals returned to Ukraine, including both military personnel and civilians.
This information was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky on social media, along with the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
Direct quote: "We are bringing Ukrainians back home. Another exchange, 84 individuals. This includes both military and civilians. Almost all of them require medical assistance and significant rehabilitation.
Among today's released civilians are those who have been held by Russians since 2014, 2016, and 2017. Among the released military personnel are defenders from Mariupol. I am grateful to everyone who helps us in our ongoing efforts to free Ukrainian prisoners."
The Coordination Headquarters clarifies that 33 military personnel and 51 civilians have been freed from Russian captivity.
The uniqueness of this exchange lies in the fact that it was possible to free civilians and military personnel who were detained in temporarily occupied territories even before the full-scale invasion and were illegally sentenced to long terms of imprisonment – from 10 to 18 years. One of the released had been imprisoned for 4013 days, having been captured in Donetsk in 2014.
Returning home are also Ukrainians who were captured and sentenced by the occupiers from 2016 to 2021. Among those released are three women from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. One of them is a primary school teacher who was imprisoned in 2019.
Among the civilians released on August 14 is a 27-year-old young man who was illegally imprisoned by the occupiers in 2016. At the time, he was only 18 years old.
In addition to civilians, defenders from the Mariupol garrison, sailors, and border guards are also returning home. Ten officers have been released.
Returning from Russian captivity are also two pairs of brothers who had been held captive since March and April 2022.
Most of the released civilians and military personnel have health issues and disabilities.
The youngest released is 26 years old, while the oldest is 74, who had spent the last 7 years (since 2018) in a Russian prison.
