Meta is preparing to enter the robotics market with aspirations to become the "Android for robots". According to Sources, the company is developing its own robot called Metabot, but the main focus is not on hardware but on creating a software platform that other manufacturers can license.
Meta's CTO, Andrew Bosworth, stated that software is the "bottleneck" in robotics development. The company has assembled a team led by former Cruise CEO Mark Whitten and joined forces with Superintelligence Labs to develop a so-called "global model". This is intended to allow robots to model complex physical actions, starting with hand movement animation and eventually performing multi-step tasks.
As early as 2025, Meta considered creating a robot for household chores—such as cleaning or folding laundry. However, at this stage, it is still in early research.
Meta is not the only one envisioning the future of home robots. Apple is working on a device with a robotic arm and a display, while Tesla regularly showcases its humanoid Optimus, albeit in controlled environments.
If the strategy succeeds, Meta could become a key provider of the "operating system" for robots, much like Google once did for smartphones. However, Google is also keeping pace; its research division, DeepMind, regularly unveils new advancements in robotics. For instance, researchers recently taught their robots to "Google" and share knowledge with each other.
