OpenAI is rolling out a new feature in ChatGPT that assists users during lengthy sessions. The AI will now gently prompt users to take breaks, which is part of a revamped approach to digital well-being, as stated in the company’s blog.
“Starting today (August 4), you will see subtle reminders to take a pause during extended sessions. We will continue to refine when and how these reminders appear to ensure they feel natural and beneficial,” OpenAI’s statement reads.
The company emphasizes that it no longer measures the success of the service by the number of clicks or time spent in the app. Instead, they focus on whether users have received the answers they sought.
“Our goal is not to hold your attention but to help you use it effectively. Instead of evaluating effectiveness by time spent or clicks, what matters to us is whether you were able to achieve what you wanted,” the developers assert.
Another significant change involves sensitive personal topics. ChatGPT will no longer provide direct answers to questions like, “Should I divorce my partner?”
“When you ask something like, ‘Should I break up with my boyfriend?’, ChatGPT should not give you an answer. It should help you think through the situation: ask questions, weigh pros and cons,” the company explains.
OpenAI has also placed a strong emphasis on mental health issues. The company acknowledges that the new model 4o sometimes failed to recognize signs of users’ emotional dependency or distress.
“We are improving our models and developing tools that better detect signs of psychological or emotional stress, so ChatGPT can respond appropriately and direct people to trusted resources if needed,” OpenAI clarifies.
Currently, the company is collaborating with medical experts from over 30 countries, as well as human-computer interaction researchers, to test the new features and strengthen ethical guidelines for the chatbot's operation.
“We are closely working with experts to enhance ChatGPT’s responses during critical moments, such as when someone shows signs of emotional or mental distress.”
Additionally, a new feature called ChatGPT Agent will be launched soon, allowing users to complete specific tasks without directly using the chat, such as scheduling events, booking medical appointments, or retrieving summaries from emails.
