The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko, met with Olympic and Paralympic medalists from Kyiv at the city hall. The capital traditionally honored the athletes and their coaches with monetary awards.
This year, the city increased the payment amounts. Specifically, athletes received nearly 2.5 million UAH for gold medals, over 1.2 million UAH for bronze medals, and 186 thousand UAH for fifth and sixth places. Their coaches also received cash bonuses.
“From July 26 to August 11 this year, Kyiv athletes participated in the Olympic Games and the Paralympics in Paris. Sports organizations, athletes, coaches, and specialists in physical culture put in tremendous effort to prepare our Olympians for these major competitions. Kyiv athletes demonstrated high sports skill, and the Ukrainian flag was raised twice in honor of their achievements. A total of 140 athletes competed for our state across 26 sports, with 42 Kyiv athletes competing in 15 sports,” stated the city mayor.
Out of the 12 medals won by the Ukrainian team at the last Olympics, Kyiv athletes Olga Kharlan and Yuliya Bakastova secured one gold medal in team sabre fencing. Olga Kharlan won two bronze medals in individual sabre fencing, and Iryna Herashchenko won a bronze in high jump. Additionally, our athletes placed fifth and sixth.
“Our Olympians have proven that Ukrainians can be champions. Thank you for your professionalism and determination. I know how hard victories in sports can be. Glory to Ukraine and those who honor her!” emphasized Vitaliy Klitschko.
