The Ukrainian community gathered with black ribbons on their flags to honor the memory of those affected by recent Russian attacks on Kyiv and to draw attention to the refugee crisis caused by Russian aggression.
The Illinois branch of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) participated in the observance of World Refugee Day, celebrated on June 20.
The event took place in Chicago on June 17.

How Ukrainians in Chicago honored the victims of attacks on Kyiv
“We came with black ribbons on our Ukrainian flags − as a sign of mourning for the victims of Russian terror last night in Kyiv,” − noted UCCA Illinois, commenting on their symbolic gesture.
During the event, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson confirmed in his speech that Chicago is a city that welcomes all refugees. He particularly mentioned Ukrainians seeking shelter from war and destruction, whose cities are being reduced to ashes due to Russian aggression.
“The crowd, made up of representatives from ethnic communities worldwide, applauded in genuine support of the Ukrainian people. Many journalists and all major news channels were present,” − described the reaction of attendees in UCCA Illinois.
The community emphasized that they came to the event to “raise awareness about Ukraine and assert that we exist, and that Ukrainians have a voice in Chicago and in American society.”
“Let us not forget to remind everyone who has ears that Russia is a terrorist state that kills, displaces millions of people, and provokes a refugee crisis globally,” − stressed the activists.
The organization sincerely thanked all participants of the event who joined in honoring. “Deepest condolences to the families of those who perished from Russian terror in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine. Let us remember that the fight for survival and Ukraine's place in the world continues,” − concluded the organization.
