The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved new regulations for the State Register of Genetically Modified Organisms, which will help improve consumer safety.
The Ministry of Agrarian Policy announced this through its press service.
This register will serve as a unified state information system, allowing for the accounting, monitoring, and storage of data on all registered GMOs in Ukraine.
The ministry explained that implementing such a register is a necessary step towards ensuring transparency in the biotechnology sector, enhancing consumer safety, and complying with Ukraine's obligations under the EU Association Agreement.
Furthermore, the resolution harmonizes Ukrainian legislation with EU acts regarding GMOs, including Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms into the environment.
This will enable the establishment of a regulatory system for the accounting and control of GMOs similar to the European one, which will reduce negative impacts and risks to human health and the environment.
The resolution will come into effect in September 2026, concurrently with a new law regulating genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
