Every year on August 23, Ukraine celebrates an important holiday – Flag Day. This flag is a symbol of the struggle for independence and the national identity of Ukrainians. What is the history of this flag and its significance?

Flag Day of Ukraine: Historical Overview

The blue and yellow colors became a national symbol of Ukraine during the European events of the 19th century, but their origins go even deeper. These colors were present in the coats of arms of cities from the times of Kievan Rus, and Cossacks used them on their banners.

Officially, the blue and yellow flag was designated as the national flag on March 22, 1918. After gaining independence in 1991, these colors became symbols of the state, and on January 28, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially confirmed it as the National Flag.

The idea of celebrating Flag Day emerged recently, 20 years ago, when in 2004, President Leonid Kuchma signed a decree establishing it officially. The date was chosen deliberately, as on August 23, 1991, the blue and yellow flag first appeared in the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada.

Symbolism of the Ukrainian Flag

There are several interpretations of the colors of the national flag. The most common version states that the blue represents the peaceful sky, while yellow symbolizes the fertile fields of Ukraine. The combination of these colors embodies harmony and the prosperity of Ukrainians.

The blue and yellow combination has a millennium-long history, dating back to the times of Kievan Rus. The first mention of the blue and yellow emblem belongs to Prince Volodymyr the Great, and later this symbol gained popularity in the Galician state.

The official recognition of the blue and yellow flag occurred during the proclamation of the Ukrainian People's Republic. In modern history, the flag was first raised at the Town Hall of Stryi on March 14, 1990, and in Kyiv on July 24, 1990.
