Renowned French filmmaker and Oscar winner Michel Hazanavicius has launched his new book titled “Ukrainian Diaries”.
Captivating Tales of Ukrainian Heroes
This publication is the result of his travels to Ukraine in 2023 and is a compilation of stories and sketches portraying real Ukrainian heroes – both defenders and civilians fighting for their future. All proceeds from the book sales will go to support Ukraine through the UNITED24 platform.
The book is written in French and features original illustrations. “Ukrainian Diaries” showcases portraits of individuals: students, artists, and entrepreneurs who have become soldiers for the future of their homeland.
What “Ukrainian Diaries” Is About
Through his sketches and short narratives, Hazanavicius aims to convey the humanity, pain, and strength of people caught in the fight for freedom. During his journeys, he met many war heroes, including Ukrainian actor Vasyl Kukhar and singer Kolya Serha, who guided him through the realities of Donbas.
The idea for the book was inspired by his meeting with the severely injured Kukhar.
“Most of the people I met are ordinary individuals who never imagined themselves in a war. I don’t know who among them is still alive, but I know for certain that we owe them so much,” Hazanavicius shares.
The director intentionally chose the format of a personal diary and drawings to maintain the trust of his story's heroes and to avoid imposing the presence of a camera during their most vulnerable moments.
By the end of April 2025, 9000 copies of the book had been sold, with all proceeds directed to UNITED24.
