Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reached out to newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to congratulate him on his election victory and discuss significant issues, including sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine on the international stage.
"I just spoke with Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, who won the elections. I extended my best wishes to him and am confident that our relationship with Canada will remain strong. Canada currently chairs the G7, and we discussed how we can collaborate within this group. I appreciate Canada's willingness to work with us in this important area," said Zelensky, emphasizing the significance of Canadian support.
Zelensky also invited Carney to visit Ukraine, highlighting the importance of Canadian leadership in international law matters.
"We talked about sanctions against Russia - agreeing that strong measures in response to aggression are still needed. We also discussed air defense for Ukraine, diplomatic efforts, and communication with our key partners," the President added.
A couple of months ago, many analysts predicted that Carney's Liberal Party would face a devastating defeat from Pierre Poilievre's Conservative Party, as Canadian voters expressed dissatisfaction with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
However, an unexpected trade war initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump significantly shifted the political landscape. The left-leaning anti-Trump coalition managed to pull off a comeback and achieve a historic victory in the final moments of the voting. On Tuesday, Poilievre lost his seat in parliament.
