A new sensory room has opened at Kyiv Children's Hospital No. 1, specifically designed for children with visual impairments. This unique space allows children to explore the world through light, sound, touch, and movement, helping them enhance their sensory skills, spatial orientation, and self-confidence. This was reported by the Department of Health of the Kyiv City State Administration.
The room offers both individual and group sessions with specialists who assist children in learning spatial orientation, fine motor skills, and social abilities.
In addition to the sensory rooms, various services are provided for visually impaired children in the capital's healthcare facilities. These include:
- diagnosis and treatment (medication or physiotherapy);
- comprehensive examinations, vision correction with glasses, special exercises, and sensory integration methods;
- surgical intervention for serious visual impairments;
- rehabilitation and sensory activities.
Medical care for children with eye diseases is provided at the outpatient stage across 8 consultative and diagnostic centers owned by the community of Kyiv. Inpatient care is available at the Kyiv City Children's Clinical Hospital No. 2 and the Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 6.
In 2025, over 22,000 children and adolescents with eye diseases and its accessory structures were registered, with more than 200 children classified as disabled.
The Department emphasizes that to preserve a child's vision, it is essential to:
- regularly undergo preventive examinations (conducted at children's clinics in their place of residence);
- monitor the work and rest regime of the eyes, especially during study and gadget use;
- if necessary, carry out early vision correction – glasses or special exercises.
