In the capital of Ukraine, despite the dangers, doctors carried out an organ transplant from a deceased four-year-old girl, successfully saving the lives of three other children.
This event marked a historic achievement for the National Children's Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdyt".
The girl from Zhytomyr region was admitted to the hospital last week, and on July 10, the medical council confirmed her death.
The girl's family, after careful consideration, decided to proceed with organ donation.
"This decision is a testament to heroism, saving three lives," emphasized the medical team.
After obtaining consent from the family, the doctors engaged in rigorous efforts to organize logistics, find recipients, and conduct surgeries under air raid alerts.
Thanks to the Unified State Information System for Transplantation, suitable patients were identified, two of whom were already in the hospital.
Among them was a 16-year-old girl with Wilson's disease, urgently needing a liver transplant. Doctors noted that the new organ was her only chance for survival.
A 14-year-old boy, who had been on dialysis for over six months, received kidneys.
Additionally, a 12-year-old girl was transplanted with a heart under an emergency status.
In total, the surgeries lasted over 13 hours, with doctors working through sirens and explosions, as timely transplantation is critical for success.
"Our recipients were in very serious conditions. I am sincerely grateful to the parents for their understanding that their decision provided a chance for three children’s lives," shared transplant surgeon Oleg Hodik.
Earlier, Kyiv doctors also saved three-year-old Bohdan, who was born without bile ducts, by performing a liver transplant from his father.
