In Lviv, Ukrainian doctors collaborated with British colleagues to perform an extraordinary surgery, transplanting a toe from a soldier's foot to his hand.
This procedure was carried out to restore the function of his only upper limb, as reported by the Superhumans Center.
The soldier, Nazar, sustained serious injuries when an enemy drone struck the car he was approaching. This incident resulted in the loss of one arm, two fingers on his other hand, a fractured jaw, and partial loss of vision.
The amputation of fingers on his only surviving hand threatened its normal functionality, as the thumb is essential for gripping.
To restore this ability, specialists at the Superhumans Center successfully transplanted the second toe from his foot to his hand.
"The surgery lasted several hours; we had to connect the bones, blood vessels, nerves, and tendons to ensure the transplanted toe received proper blood supply, sensitivity, and mobility," the clinic explained.
On the seventh day after the procedure, the soldier began training with specialists to learn how to control the transplanted toe. A month later, doctors noted Nazar's progress – he could open bottle caps and pick up small items.
"There are still several months of rehabilitation ahead, but the chances for a full recovery of gripping function look promising," stated the Superhumans Center.
Nazar admits that he is eager to regain the ability to meet his basic needs and hopes to return to service.
