A 52-year-old man from Kyiv, who is the head of a university department, had his car destroyed by fire after a jealous individual sought revenge. The perpetrator, feeling spurned after months of trying to restore a relationship, decided to set the victim's vehicle ablaze with a flammable liquid, sustaining burns in the process. Law enforcement quickly apprehended him and charged him, facing up to 10 years in prison.
The police in Kyiv received a report of a vehicle on fire in the courtyard of an apartment building on Radunska Street. Investigators and emergency services were dispatched to the scene. The fire completely consumed the Hyundai vehicle.
Police operatives and criminal analysts determined that a 49-year-old resident of the Holosiivskyi district was responsible for the arson, arriving at the crime scene with a prepared canister of gasoline. He broke the car's window, doused the interior with the flammable liquid, and set it on fire, obtaining burns on his hands during the act.
The suspect was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He claimed that his actions were motivated by a desire for revenge against his ex-partner's new boyfriend, as he still had feelings for her.
Investigators, under the guidance of the Desnyansky District Prosecutor's Office, charged the suspect under part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for intentional damage to property through arson. He faces up to ten years of imprisonment for his crime.
