The Security Service of Ukraine has apprehended a spy who was coordinating enemy strikes in the Zhytomyr and Khmelnytskyi regions.
The main objective of the arrested individual was to supply the enemy with up-to-date images of energy facilities in these areas. This would enable the aggressors to assess the technical status and security of crucial assets.
According to the investigation, the detained individual is a citizen of a Middle Eastern country residing in Zviahel.
He came under the radar of Russian intelligence while seeking "easy earnings" on Telegram channels.
It has been documented that after recruitment, he was driving around in his own car, stopping near energy facilities and substations close to the Khmelnytskyi NPP.
While near potential targets, the spy took photographs of their perimeters and security posts.
Additionally, during his reconnaissance missions, he also recorded the locations of defense checkpoints at the entrances to populated areas.
SBU agents caught him at the initial stage of his mission when he was photographing a Ukrainian substation.
During searches, a smartphone containing evidence of his collusion with the enemy was seized from him.
Based on the gathered evidence, SBU investigators informed him of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  •  Part 1 of Article 14, Part 2 of Article 113 (preparation for committing sabotage in wartime conditions);
  •  Part 2 of Article 114-2 (unauthorized dissemination of information about the location of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during wartime).

The suspect is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with property confiscation.
Comprehensive measures were carried out by SBU officers in the Khmelnytskyi and Zhytomyr regions under the procedural guidance of the Khmelnytskyi regional prosecutor's office.
