A businessman with three young children and the ability to leave the country promised a local resident to transport him to the border in the trunk of his car for a fee, allowing him to cross into another country on foot. He now faces up to nine years in prison.
Investigators from the Pechersk Police Department, along with officers from the UCR in Kyiv and under the procedural guidance of the Pechersk District Prosecutor's Office, uncovered the illegal activities of a 37-year-old Kyiv entrepreneur who organized the smuggling of conscripted men to neighboring countries.
The offender found 'clients' among his acquaintances and promised to facilitate their illegal crossing of the Ukrainian state border for a fee of $4,000. For instance, he promised to transport a conscripted man to the border with Romania, hiding him among belongings in the minibus's cargo area, after which the 'client' was to cross the border on foot.
Law enforcement officers arrested the offender under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine while he was receiving part of the payment - $2,000, which he received from the client for the 'service'.
The man has been charged under part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - organizing the illegal transport of individuals across the state border of Ukraine for selfish motives. The article's sanction provides for up to nine years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
