Police in Kyiv thwarted an attempt to illegally trade a newborn baby. Representatives of a private medical clinic specializing in infertility treatments attempted to hand over a newborn girl to a foreign couple, despite the lack of biological connection.
Migration police officers, together with investigators from the Pechersk police department and under the supervision of the prosecutor's office, identified individuals involved in the illegal transfer of the child.
It was established that a contract was signed between the foreign couple and a Kyiv-based clinic for reproductive services. In 2022, embryos were created from biological material, and in 2024, they were transferred to a surrogate mother.
After the birth of twins, DNA testing revealed that the girl had no genetic connection to the husband in the couple. Despite this, representatives of the clinic decided to hand over the infant to the foreigners, illegally keeping the child in rented apartments in Kyiv and preparing for a fictitious adoption. The girl is currently in a medical facility.
Investigators notified the organizer and manager of the clinic of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 3 of Article 15 and Part 3 of Article 149 – attempted human trafficking, and Part 2 of Article 169 – illegal actions regarding adoption.
The maximum penalty is up to fifteen years of imprisonment.
