An MP from the banned «OPZZH» party has been arrested in Ukraine while being wanted on charges of treason, committed in conspiracy with a group of individuals during wartime and abuse of influence.
According to investigations, the FSB of Russia recruited him long before the start of the full-scale invasion and he actively carried out tasks for the Russian special services. Specifically, during 2020-2021, the suspect established an effective mechanism to influence the leadership of one of Ukraine's law enforcement agencies, allowing him to gather and relay necessary information to representatives of the Russian Federation.
After the full-scale invasion began, the elected official left Ukraine and continued his illegal activities from abroad.
In July of this year, prosecutors from the Office of the Attorney General informed the MP of suspicion of treason, committed in conspiracy with a group of individuals during wartime under Part 2 of Article 28, Part 1, Part 2 of Article 111, and abuse of influence under Part 2 of Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court then chose a preventive measure of detention in absentia.
Today, following his arrest, he was brought to the Pechersk District Court in Kyiv, which applied the previously chosen preventive measure, namely detention until 21.10.2025.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
Note: According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court verdict.
