In Kyiv, during daylight hours, a criminal openly snatched a gold chain with a cross from a woman, a cherished family heirloom. Thanks to prompt police action, the suspect was quickly identified and arrested, and the stolen jewelry was recovered. He now faces up to ten years in prison.
The police received a call on the emergency line 102 from a woman who reported that an unknown man had snatched a gold chain with a cross and icon from her neck in a park near a public transport stop and fled the scene. The duty officer immediately dispatched an investigative team to the location.
Authorities determined that the attacker was a 34-year-old resident of the capital with a history of criminal offenses. His victim was an 84-year-old Kyiv resident for whom the stolen cross held significant family value as it was a memento from her mother. Despite the suspect having sold the jewelry, officers quickly identified the buyer and recovered the item as evidence.
The suspect was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
Investigators charged the offender under part 4 of Article 186 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – robbery involving violence. The court has placed him in custody as a preventive measure. The article's sanctions provide for up to ten years of imprisonment.
