The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has approved a new educational program for high school students. This document is a significant step towards reforming the educational process.

The program allows students in grades 10-12 to choose their own educational path.

Choosing a study profile. Students can select their package of subjects included in the default profile. For example, by choosing a math profile, students will delve deeper into mathematics and related subjects.

Choosing advanced courses. Students can select subjects or courses within their profile that enhance their knowledge and skills. For instance, combinatorial analysis for the math profile.

Choosing non-profile subjects. Students may choose subjects and courses outside their profile for holistic development. For example, a student in the math profile may opt for a drama and theater course.

Additionally, the program includes compulsory subjects for all students. All subjects required for the state final certification after grade 12 (in the format of ZNO / NMT) will be studied over three years.

What else changes with the New Educational Program:

  • The ability to form variable groups to facilitate the study of elective subjects and courses.
  • A reduction in the number of compulsory subjects. Previously, 11th-grade students were required to study at least 14 subjects, but now in 12th grade, this list can be reduced to 5-8 (depending on the profile). This is especially relevant for schools implementing integrated learning.
  • Schools can independently create programs for non-profile subjects and elective courses. They do not necessarily have to be based on approved model curricula.

How many hours will be allocated for different educational areas

The New Educational Program contains standard curricula (tables with hour allocations for subjects/courses) for three clusters:

  • Linguistic and Literary
  • Social and Humanitarian
  • STEM

Within these clusters, lyceums will be able to create various profiles.

Grade 10 — profile-adaptive cycle (students can change their profile)

  • The number of hours for compulsory educational components in the first semester of grade 10 is the same for all students. This will help to address possible educational gaps and gradually adapt to new learning formats.
  • Students will have hours for elective subjects and courses in the first semester.
  • In the second semester, the number of hours for profile subjects will increase.

Grades 11-12 — profile cycle

  • The curriculum includes a larger number of hours for studying chosen profiles and elective subjects and courses.
  • Each year, the number of such hours will increase, while the hours for compulsory subjects will decrease.
