In the Pechersk district of Kyiv, a section of Lavrska Street from Slava Square to Dobrovolchy Batallions Street was renamed in honor of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. Another segment, from Dobrovolchy Batallions Street to Navodnytska Square, has returned to its historical name – Novonavodnytska Street. This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration.
The decision was made by 72 deputies during the plenary session of the V session of the Kyiv City Council on December 4.
The initiator of the renaming, Kyiv City Council member Olesya Pinzenik, noted that residents of Kyiv had been advocating for the name change since 2022, supporting an electronic petition.
The initiative was later discussed and supported during a public consultation.
The change was also endorsed by the National Sanctuary "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra" and the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide.
"Ivan Mazepa is one of the most prominent statesmen in Ukrainian history and a patron who made significant contributions to the development of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. His name should be memorialized on the street where the temples he funded stand restored. The change of the street name in 2010 at the demand of the Moscow Patriarchate is an insult to Ukrainian history and a direct influence of the enemy on our local self-government," emphasized Pinzenik.
"Today we are restoring to the residents of Kyiv their right to their own memory. I am grateful to all those who fought for this decision and urge everyone to continue actively participating in shaping the cultural environment of our city," noted Pinzenik.
