Microsoft has unveiled its latest innovation – Dragon Copilot, a voice assistant tailored for healthcare professionals, integrating the dictation capabilities of Dragon Medical One with the ambient listening technology of DAX Copilot.
This groundbreaking tool is set to assist physicians in swiftly accessing vital information and automatically generating clinical documents such as notes and referrals. This initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to alleviate administrative burdens that contribute to burnout among healthcare workers.
Research from Google Cloud indicates that healthcare providers spend up to 28 hours per week on administrative tasks, including paperwork. Dragon Copilot aims to help doctors focus more on patient care by reducing the time spent on computer work. The technology enables users to edit records using natural language and ask questions regarding diagnoses or treatments.
In 2021, Microsoft acquired Nuance Communications, the developer behind these technologies, positioning itself as a significant player in the medical records automation market. The DAX Copilot technology is already being utilized in over 3 million patient visits, and with a refreshed interface, Microsoft hopes to stand out against competitors like Abridge and Suki.
Dragon Copilot will be accessible via a mobile app, web browser, or desktop. Physicians will be able to leverage this technology for automatic clinical note-taking and efficient handling of medical data. The system is set to launch in the United States and Canada in May 2025, with plans for expansion into other countries afterwards.
