The mobile operator "Kyivstar" has successfully completed testing its SIM card for compatibility with the Starlink satellite network, marking a significant step towards the implementation of Direct to Cell technology in Ukraine. This was reported by the company's press service.
The testing took place in a partner laboratory in the USA. During the trials, the "Kyivstar" SIM card was able to synchronize with the Starlink network, and the system correctly identified the subscriber and processed signals. This confirms the technical readiness for integrating satellite communication.
"Kyivstar became the first company in Europe to sign an agreement with Starlink for launching Direct to Cell due to our strategic approach and the technological readiness of our team. We have been monitoring the development of this technology since 2021. In times of war, when communication is critically important, the company decided to invest in Direct to Cell," — said Ilya Polishakov, Director of New Business Development at "Kyivstar"
The Direct to Cell technology allows mobile coverage to be provided directly from satellites to regular smartphones without the need for special equipment. In the future, it will complement Kyivstar's terrestrial infrastructure and enable users to stay connected even during complete blackouts or in hard-to-reach areas like mountains or rural regions.
The next step will be field testing of Direct to Cell services in specific locations in Ukraine, which "Kyivstar" plans to start in the summer of 2025. In the initial phase of testing, "Kyivstar" specialists will be able to verify text messaging capabilities.
Notably, the Direct to Cell service will be available to all "Kyivstar" subscribers with a smartphone and a 4G-supported SIM card. The company emphasizes that satellite communication will not replace the terrestrial network but will play a crucial role in emergencies.
Recall that "Kyivstar" and Starlink signed an agreement for the use of satellite communications in Ukraine in December 2024. In March 2025, the NCCIR granted "Kyivstar" the code "707" for satellite mobile communication.
