Ukrainian sumo wrestler Danilo Aonishiki Yavgusishin has secured his eighth victory at the international sumo tournament Kyushu 2025, taking place in Fukuoka, Japan.
On the ninth day of the competition, he faced maegashira Hiradumi.
The match was competitive, but Danilo's agility allowed him to outmaneuver his opponent.
Currently, he holds a record of 8-1, placing him in sole second position on the leaderboard.
Yokozuna Onosato leads with a score of 9-0. Several rikishi also have a record of 7-2.
Tomorrow, November 18, the 21-year-old Aonishiki will face Tamawashi in the dohyo. This 41-year-old wrestler gave a solid challenge to Onosato yesterday but has a tournament record of 4-5.
The competition will continue until November 23. If multiple wrestlers have the same record, a playoff will be held between them.
Sumo wrestlers, even those from outside Japan, choose names for their performances. Danilo adopted the nickname Aonishiki Arata, which translates to "Blue Brocade" (a decorative fabric with a silk base). This metaphor can signify a young but bright talent or noble strength in a youthful body.
