Maxim Shulga, a young and promising basketball player from Ukraine, was picked at the 57th spot in the second round of the 2025 NBA draft.

On June 27, the draft took place, opening new doors for the 23-year-old Ukrainian in one of the world's most prestigious leagues.

Shulga was chosen by Orlando, who then traded him to Boston along with the 46th pick, Amari Williams, under a prior agreement.

Orlando received the 32nd pick, selecting forward Noah Penda, while Boston acquired Shulga, Williams, and two second-round draft picks (2026, 2027).

According to ESPN analyst Jonathan Givony, Maxim Shulga will sign a two-way contract with Boston. This means that he can play both in the NBA and for their G-League affiliate. Throughout the season, Boston will have the option to keep Maxim in the G-League or convert his two-way deal into a regular contract.

This draft is significant as Shulga becomes the first Ukrainian player selected in the NBA draft in the last seven years. In 2018, the Washington Wizards drafted Issuf Sanon, while Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk was picked by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Interestingly, Mykhailiuk was the only Ukrainian to have played for the Boston Celtics, helping the team secure its 18th championship last year.

Shulga declared for the NBA draft after completing his fifth season in the NCAA, where he played for the Virginia Commonwealth Rams (VCU).

With his team, he became the champion of the Atlantic-10 division, while he was recognized as the player of the year.

After VCU exited the NCAA March Madness tournament, Maxim participated in the NABC-Reese Division I All-Star Game.

Later, he was invited to the NBA draft combine, showcasing his skills among 75 NCAA players.
