Turkey will continue its efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict and humanitarian assistance, particularly regarding the return of Ukrainians, both military and civilian, from Russian captivity. This was stated by the representative of the Turkish Chief Ombudsman Office, Sadettin Kalkan, during a meeting with families of prisoners of war.
“You are enduring a difficult time that no one should have to experience. As a neighboring nation, we are deeply saddened by this. We hope for a swift resolution to the conflict and will continue to work on this… Our efforts will persist,” Kalkan noted.
The ombudsman emphasized the importance of the Turkish president's diplomatic initiatives in achieving peace and addressing humanitarian issues.
“We have reached out to the Russian ombudsman, Tatiana Moskalkova, to request monitoring conditions for Ukrainian prisoners of war. Unfortunately, we have not received a response… We will continue to convey your requests and provide support,” Kalkan added.
During the meeting, families of prisoners of war spoke about violations of international norms by Russia, including torture, harsh treatment, and inhumane conditions of detention.
Families of the missing and prisoners reported numerous instances where Russia does not confirm the status of certain individuals, despite evidence from released soldiers and videos circulating on social media.
“Russia continues to violate international conventions. Our only support is your assistance. They are killing our servicemen, returning not only the living but also the deceased. A significant issue is confirming the status of the missing,” stated Svitlana Lyashko, head of the public movement “In the Footsteps of Those Awaited”.
Families have also highlighted the lack of communication with the detained, medical assistance, and inadequate living conditions.
“In Russian captivity, individuals are subjected to severe torture and constant pressure. After my release, I joined an organization that helps return prisoners home. We are grateful to Turkey for its support in this process,” shared a former prisoner of war and defender of Mariupol.
Family representatives handed over lists and requests to the Turkish ombudsman regarding the release of their relatives from Russian captivity.
