Obolon Island in the capital has become the first in Ukraine to receive the international environmental award — the Green Flag, indicating that the recreation area meets ecological standards. This was reported by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko via Telegram.
«The Green Flag is a prestigious award that confirms the island meets international requirements for management, safety, and accessibility. This is Ukraine's first experience in this program,» he noted.
Klitschko emphasized that the Green Flag accreditation has been in existence since 1996 and establishes quality criteria for parks and natural areas.
The award is administered by Keep Britain Tidy, operating under a license from the British government.
The mayor mentioned that the assessment took place at the end of July with the participation of international experts, ensuring transparency in the process.
The event was organized by the Department of Environmental Protection and the municipal enterprise «Pleso».
The decision to award the island was made after a thorough evaluation of its condition.
«This award makes Obolon Island even more attractive for visitors,» Klitschko emphasized.
Last year, the construction of a pedestrian bridge to Obolon Island was completed in Kyiv, connecting the «Natalka» park and the waterfront.
