On Wednesday, August 6, the National Circus of Ukraine announced the passing of Stanislav Bakhtasovych Filipenko — a renowned circus performer, director, and educator who dedicated his life to his beloved art. He was 87 years old.
Stanislav Filipenko was born on July 8, 1938. He began his career in circus arts in 1956, right after finishing school. For 26 years, he worked as a performer in the 'Goscircus' system, mastering several complex genres — from juggling and acrobatics to equilibristics and animal training. He performed with leading troupes in Ukraine and abroad, including in the inaugural program of the Kyiv State Circus 'For You, Kyivans.'
In 1983, Stanislav Filipenko joined the folk circus 'Youth of Kyiv,' starting as a tutor and eventually leading the troupe. His students remember him as a wise mentor who knew how to connect with each child and ignite their interest in circus arts. Thanks to his efforts, 'Youth of Kyiv' became one of the most successful amateur circus collectives in Ukraine, winning accolades at numerous international and national festivals.
Filipenko's teaching career produced hundreds of talented performers who now grace stages in Ukraine, Europe, Canada, and the USA. Four of his students worked in the world-famous circus 'Du Soleil,' and over 20 dynasties of artists emerged from his studio.
For the last 15 years, he also taught at the Kyiv Municipal Academy of Variety and Circus Arts while simultaneously managing 'Youth of Kyiv.'
In recognition of his contributions to cultural development, Stanislav Filipenko received numerous awards — including the 'Kyiv' Artistic Award in circus arts named after the Yalovy brothers, and honorary certificates from the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the Capital's Department of Culture, and the Pechersk District State Administration.
The farewell ceremony for the artist will take place at Baikove Cemetery. Further details will be announced later.
Condolences to the family...
