An expert discussion titled “Joint Efforts to Combat Illegal Arms Trafficking” was held in Ukraine, featuring Interior Minister Igor Klymenko and OSCE Special Representative Ambassador Petr Maresh. The event was organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in partnership with the OSCE.

Attendees included deputy ministers, representatives from law enforcement, international organizations, and members of the Ukrainian parliament. The event was moderated by Mykola Hrynzov, Director of the Department of Interaction with the National Police of Ukraine.

The Minister emphasized that controlling the arms trade is a critical security issue during wartime. “The ongoing conflict poses a significant risk of firearms entering criminal environments. We are implementing measures that enhance citizen safety,” Klymenko stressed.

The Ministry continues to improve its firearms control systems. The implementation of a Unified Firearms Register has been a significant step in enhancing regulation in this area. Integration of the register with the “Diia” platform has simplified the registration process.

“Since June 2023, the Unified Firearms Register has been operational, streamlining the registration process for citizens,” the Minister added.

Additionally, since November 25 of last year, Ukraine has been running a voluntary weapons declaration process that allows citizens to legalize unregistered firearms. The Ministry is also actively conducting awareness campaigns regarding responsibilities for illegal possession of firearms.

The OSCE Special Representative highlighted Ukraine's achievements in establishing the firearms register and the efforts of law enforcement agencies.

“Illegal firearms trafficking poses a serious threat to society. Together with international partners, we are uniting our efforts to combat this challenge,” emphasized Petr Maresh.

During the discussion, participants reviewed the outcomes of the voluntary firearms declaration initiative and international cooperation in controlling dangerous substances. The event also served as a platform for exchanging experiences and developing joint initiatives in the field of security.
