The Moldovan authorities have initiated an investigation into the assets and income declarations of Eugenia Gutsul, the head of the Gagauzia autonomous region, who is implicated in a case regarding the illegal financing of the "Shor" party.
This has been reported by news outlets, including "European Truth".
The National Anti-Corruption Agency (ANI) launched this investigation based on a complaint filed on March 27.
The complaint suggests that Gutsul's declarations may indicate violations. Notably, it highlights large monetary gifts received by Gutsul during family celebrations. In 2023, she reportedly received 23,000 euros and 220,000 Moldovan lei, and in 2024, 4,000 euros and 170,000 lei. There is also mention of inconsistencies, as Gutsul has owned her own residence since 2019 but is residing in her sister's apartment.
Inspectors will check for any unjustified discrepancies between Gutsul's income and expenses, as well as the legality of the funds declared as gifts from private individuals.
It should be noted that last week the court altered the preventive measure for Eugenia Gutsul, placing her under house arrest.
Eugenia Gutsul is a defendant in a criminal case in Moldova that has been in court since April 2024. She is accused of systematically smuggling money from Russia into Moldova during her tenure as secretary of the "Shor" party from 2019 to 2022, which was used to finance the party's political activities. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office of Moldova also accuses her of coordinating the activities of certain party offices.
