The energy holding DTEK has imported a batch of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) through the Klaipeda terminal in Lithuania, according to Bloomberg.
D.Trading, a subsidiary, delivered its first shipment of approximately 100 million cubic meters of gas from the Plaquemines plant operated by Venture Global Inc. in Louisiana to the Klaipeda LNG terminal in Lithuania.
This marks the first instance where a Ukrainian trader was responsible for chartering a tanker, loading LNG onto the Gaslog Houston on October 20.
Ukraine aims to diversify its energy supplies after Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure last month destroyed more than half of its domestic gas production, Bloomberg reported.
For D.Trading, which has previously supplied American LNG via Greece, access to the Lithuanian terminal provides alternative delivery routes for LNG through the northern corridor connecting Ukraine with Poland and the Baltic states.
“We are working with European and American partners to develop cost-effective routes for increasing gas supplies to Ukraine and neighboring countries. The company estimates that Ukraine needs about 4 billion cubic meters of gas imports this winter following the attacks by Russia,” said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko.
As reported, at the end of December 2024, DTEK received its first batch of 100 million cubic meters of liquefied natural gas from the United States after an LNG vessel docked in Greece. DTEK manages the energy assets of SCM owned by Rinat Akhmetov.
