On the night of October 26-27, Ukrainians switched to winter time by setting their clocks back one hour at 4:00 AM, resulting in a 25-hour day.
The concept of summer and winter time was first introduced in the UK in 1908 to optimize electricity usage. For decades, the clock changes in Ukraine have occurred on the last Sunday of October and March. This practice is regulated by a Cabinet of Ministers decree from May 13, 1996, No. 509.
On July 16, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada adopted Bill No. 4201, which eliminates the switch between summer and winter time. According to the new law, a single Kyiv time of UTC+2 will be established in Ukraine. Therefore, in 2024, Ukrainians will set their clocks back for the last time, and from 2025 onward, the transition to summer time will no longer take place. However, this law has yet to be signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
