At the National Military Memorial Cemetery (NMMC), 108 burials of Ukrainian defenders have taken place since its opening on August 29. This was reported to the agency by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs.
According to the ministry, among the buried are 97 military personnel, whose names are currently unknown, as well as 11 defenders, whose families requested that the burials take place at the NMMC. Temporary memorial markers with their names have been placed at their graves, and later, their names will be immortalized on the Memorial Wall of Remembrance.
The ministry clarified that burials are conducted both traditionally and by interring urns with ashes. A Hero of Ukraine rests in the cemetery's columbarium. It was also reported that the state institution continuously receives new requests from the families of fallen soldiers who wish to bury their loved ones in the memorial grounds.
“This process is ongoing, and the number of requests is increasing. Families are awaiting the conduct of ceremonial events in accordance with the established procedures,” — the ministry stated.
All burials are performed according to the military burial ritual of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with adherence to military honors. Representatives of the clergy participate in the ceremonies at the request of the families.
One of the buried at the National Military Memorial Cemetery is a volunteer warrior, Maidan activist, journalist, and historian Oleg Rybalchenko. He died in the winter of 2022. After the requiem service, his body was cremated, and the urn with his ashes was buried on September 20, 2025, at the memorial. His family waited for this opportunity for over three years for the Hero to find eternal rest in a place that honors Ukrainian defenders.
It is worth noting that the memorial cemetery opened on August 29 in the Fastiv district of Kyiv region. The first to be buried here were five unknown defenders of Ukraine. The project plans to accommodate up to 120–130 thousand burial sites in total.
