As of midnight on July 7, Poland has reintroduced border control at its borders with Germany and Lithuania.
The Polish Minister of the Interior, Tomasz Semoniak, along with Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak, was present at the Polish-German border.
«Border checks with Germany and Lithuania have commenced. I thank all the border guards, police, military, and services involved», Semoniak stated on social media platform X.
During a press conference in Świecko at the Polish-German border, Semoniak announced that temporary checkpoints would be critical infrastructure under special protection.
He reminded that all residents of Poland received SMS notifications about the new entry controls at the border.
The temporary border control has been reinstated at 65 points: 52 along the German border and 13 on the Lithuanian border, with 800 border guards supported by 300 police officers, 500 Territorial Defense soldiers, and 200 military gendarmes.
Recently, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Poland would temporarily restore border control due to the increase in illegal migration. He explained that Germany's recent changes in policy regarding migrants have led to tensions on the Polish border.
Regarding Lithuania, Tusk mentioned that illegal migrants were also entering Poland through this border. Poland effectively blocked illegal migration through its Belarusian border but faced challenges with migrants arriving from Latvia and Lithuania.
In 2022, Poland constructed a 5.5-meter tall barrier along its border with Belarus in response to the artificial migration pressure created by Belarus and Russia.
