The black and white Flag of Hope has been raised at the stations of Ukrainian Railways.

This flag symbolizes the unwavering faith in the return of our defenders who are in captivity, as well as honoring the memory of those who have fallen. The initiative was carried out in partnership with the charitable foundation Steel, founded by Hero of Ukraine Serhiy Volynskyi.

In the early days of the invasion, the trains of Ukrainian Railways provided refuge for thousands of Ukrainians, making it symbolic that this flag is being raised above the railway stations.

“Today we raise the Flag of Hope to remind everyone: we will not stop until every captive and every missing person returns home. The black stripe represents death and loss, while the white stripe symbolizes hope and the relentless struggle for our own. Together, these colors merge into a single canvas — a symbol of unwavering resistance for every Ukrainian still away from home. Ukraine awaits its fighters, each and every one held captive. The Flag of Hope serves as a daily reminder to the country and the world of every POW and missing Ukrainian,” said Hero of Ukraine Serhiy Volynskyi.

“Forty of our railway colleagues are still in captivity, and over four hundred are missing. We believe that each of them, every Ukrainian, will return home. We want to give this initiative a boost — whether it’s private business or a public institution — to raise the black and white flag in support of all captives. Today, such flags are flying over a hundred of our stations, and we want to see them in thousands. And then, one day, on a happy and sunny day, we can lower them, because everyone will return,” said the chairman of the board of JSC Ukrainian Railways, Oleksandr Pertzovsky.
