The Security Service of Ukraine has detained a Russian agent in Zaporizhzhia who was preparing to assassinate a soldier from an elite military unit. According to reports from the SBU, the suspect attempted to plant an improvised explosive device in the soldier's residence for a remote detonation.
Investigations revealed that a 44-year-old engineer, recruited by the FSB, worked at a local medical facility. He rented a room where the soldier stayed during his rotation after combat missions.
After reporting to the FSB, the agent was instructed to retrieve explosives from a hiding place and secretly install them near the soldier's front door.
The SBU operatives uncovered the hostile plot in time and arrested the suspect at the preparation stage of the attack.
During a search of his residence, they found an electric detonator and components for the explosive device, along with other evidence of contacts with the FSB.
The investigation indicated that the suspect was recruited by Russians through an acquaintance living in temporarily occupied Melitopol and working for Russian intelligence.
Simultaneously, while carrying out his main task, the agent was providing enemy forces with geolocations of active energy facilities in Zaporizhzhia that were targeted for air strikes.
Based on the gathered evidence, the SBU has charged the suspect with treason under part 2 of article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The suspect is currently in custody without bail, facing a life sentence.
