A few years back, an offender moved to Kyiv from the occupied Crimea. In search of «easy» money, he contacted a handler from the aggressor country who promised him payment for setting military vehicles on fire. The accused faces up to ten years of imprisonment for his actions.
In early October of this year, the Kyiv police received reports about two military SUVs, Isuzu Trooper and Ford, that were set ablaze while parked on the streets. Subsequently, the police identified a 34-year-old native of Simferopol as the suspect.
According to the head of the Shevchenkivskyi Police Department, investigators along with operational staff and criminal analysts discovered that in 2014, after Crimea's annexation, the suspect remained living in the temporarily occupied territory and acquired a Russian passport:
«Later, in 2021, he relocated to Kyiv and joined the territorial defense at the onset of the full-scale invasion. However, he deserted and, in search of «easy» money, contacted a handler from the aggressor country who promised him payments for destroying military vehicles. Thus, the man purchased flammable liquid and set fire to two military vehicles. The operational teams, in collaboration with criminal analysts, soon apprehended this 34-year-old suspect».
Subsequently, the investigators, under the procedural guidance of the Shevchenkivskyi District Prosecutor's Office, notified the suspect of his charges under part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – intentional destruction of property by fire. The suspect was held in custody during the investigation.
Currently, the pre-trial investigation has concluded, and the accused faces imprisonment for up to ten years.
