In Kyiv, prosecutors successfully upheld the verdict against a man who brutally killed a stray dog. The Kyiv Appeal Court confirmed the decision of the Dnipro District Court, sentencing the 31-year-old defendant to 7.5 years in prison for animal cruelty that led to the dog's death (Part 3 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The defendant's lawyer sought to reduce the sentence by requesting the court to reclassify the actions from Part 3 to Part 1 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code, advocating for a 2-year imprisonment instead.
The convicted individual, who lived with his partner, her two sons, and their 11-month-old daughter, brought a stray dog named Milka into their apartment and then began to force her out.
The man kicked the dog and, while holding his daughter, threw the dog down the stairs, subsequently continuing to beat her. The dog died from numerous internal injuries caused by the blows, the fall, and fatal blood loss, as confirmed by forensic examinations. Surveillance cameras captured the horrific acts of cruelty.
The Kyiv Appeal Court upheld the initial ruling without changes.
