Two distinguished Ukrainian scientists, mathematician Marina Vyazovska and climatologist Svitlana Krakovska, have been elected as international members of the National Academy of Sciences USA (NAS).
This recognition comes as a result of their contributions to original research, as noted on the institution's official website.
Marina Vyazovska and Svitlana Krakovska are now part of the international community of NAS.
This year, the National Academy of Sciences USA welcomed 150 new members, including:
- 120 American scientists;
- 30 scientists from other countries, including Ukrainians Marina Vyazovska and Svitlana Krakovska.
Marina Vyazovska is a professor and heads the number theory department at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.
She has gained international acclaim for her innovative contributions in theoretical mathematics.
In 2022, she became the second woman in history to receive the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics.
Svitlana Krakovska is the head of the Applied Climatology Laboratory at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute.
She is a prominent contemporary Ukrainian scientist and a leading representative of climate science in Ukraine.
Svitlana Krakovska explains the rapid changes in the climate using mathematical models and physical laws that accurately describe current and future climate processes.
What is the National Academy of Sciences USA?
The National Academy of Sciences USA is a private organization established in 1863.
It recognizes scientific achievements by electing new members and provides scientific, engineering, and medical advice to the federal government and other organizations in collaboration with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine.
Currently, NAS has 2662 active members and 556 international members.
