Germany has suspended the acceptance of new refugees under the resettlement program, as reported by Handelsblatt.

The resettlement process for refugees is temporarily halted

The German Ministry of the Interior and the UNHCR confirmed that due to ongoing coalition negotiations among political parties, new commitments for refugee acceptance will not be made.

According to dpa, exceptions will only be made for cases that are already in the final stages.

Earlier, the political parties decided to limit the federal refugee acceptance programs and not initiate new ones.

Germany has committed to providing a total of 13,100 places for refugees in 2024 and 2025.

According to UNHCR, to date, 5,061 individuals have arrived in the country under this program, including humanitarian acceptance of Syrian refugees from Turkey.

In the resettlement process, UNHCR proposes candidates who are particularly in need of protection.

German representatives then conduct interviews and security checks on-site.

Germany also has additional humanitarian programs for refugee acceptance.

Germany has lost its leadership in the EU for the number of asylum applications

For the first time in a long while, Germany is no longer the EU country with the highest number of asylum requests. France now leads.

In the first quarter of 2025, the number of asylum applications in Germany significantly dropped to 37,387, reflecting a 41% decrease compared to the same period last year.
