This morning, several crucial Ukrainian electrical substations were damaged by Russian military strikes, leading to a complete loss of external power supply at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
According to a post from the IAEA on social media platform X, the organization's director general, Rafael Grossi, emphasized that these substations are vital for Ukraine's nuclear safety.
"Chernobyl NPP has lost all external electricity supply, and transmission lines connecting other nuclear power plants were also damaged," the statement said.
Grossi noted that the IAEA is "actively monitoring the situation to assess the impact on nuclear safety."
The day before, Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal informed Grossi about the preparations for a new wave of attacks by Russia targeting the energy infrastructure, potentially threatening facilities serving nuclear power plants.
