The new phase of prisoner exchange sees the return of Ukrainian defenders who urgently need care.
Today marked the completion of the first phase of the exchange for the category of “severely injured and seriously ill”.
Under the agreements made in Istanbul, the Coordination Headquarters for the treatment of prisoners of war, on the instructions of the President, facilitated the return of a group of defenders from Russian captivity, who are facing significant health issues.
Back on home soil are military personnel from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including representatives from the Navy, Ground Forces, Territorial Defense, Airborne Forces, Special Operations Forces, Border Guard, National Guard, and the State Special Transport Service.
Among those freed today are defenders of Mariupol, who spent over three years in captivity. In addition to soldiers and sergeants, some officers were also released.
All released individuals suffer from serious injuries and critical illnesses: amputations, vision problems, abscesses, infections, trauma, shrapnel wounds, and chronic diseases. Some have been diagnosed with hepatitis and tuberculosis.
The rescued defenders will be taken to medical facilities for necessary examinations and further treatment. They will receive required assistance, their documents will be restored, and appropriate payments for their time in captivity will be issued.
The major prisoner exchange continues. For security reasons, the exact number of freed individuals will be announced after the exchange process is completed.
The Coordination Headquarters continues its work and will soon initiate the next phase of releasing Ukrainian captives.
We are committed to bringing everyone home!
Glory to Ukraine!
