Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has instructed the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to enhance cooperation with international partners to secure funding for the production of Ukrainian drones capable of intercepting Russian drones.
This followed discussions on protecting Ukrainian airspace during a military command meeting on Tuesday, May 6.
The president shared this information in his evening video address.
Zelensky Initiates Funding for Drones to Combat “Shaheds”
“Another important topic discussed today was the protection of Ukrainian airspace, specifically the interception of Shaheds, particularly using other drones,” the president stated.
This is one of the most advanced technologies in modern warfare. I am grateful to all who implement it, who provide this new capability for any army – to protect their country from drones… We will develop this direction as much as possible, and each region will have its own responsibility for this work.

Ukraine plans to enhance its capabilities in combating Russian UAVs through the development of its own technologies and securing international financial support for their production.
Diplomatic Efforts to Intensify – Zelensky
The president noted that in the coming weeks, significant diplomatic initiatives are expected, related to securing new packages of international aid and increasing pressure on Russia.
Furthermore, he mentioned that initial negotiations with the new Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, are being prepared.
“Overall, the next few weeks are expected to be very active for Ukraine in diplomacy,” Zelensky said. “We are preparing solutions and new support packages. We are preparing new pressure steps against Russia to protect our people. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine.”
The president also highlighted future cooperation with the new German leadership, stating that “initial negotiations with the new Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, are being prepared.”
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine and Germany have “joint plans that can strengthen the economies of both nations and ensure greater security for years to come.”
