Google has officially announced the launch of a new feature called AI Inbox in Gmail, which utilizes the cutting-edge Gemini model to analyze emails and generate concise summaries of key topics and tasks. This breakthrough marks the beginning of a new era for the Gmail service.
AI Inbox is designed to analyze messages in your inbox, automatically compiling a list of important tasks and themes. The system identifies tasks based on the context of the emails and provides quick access to messages that require urgent attention. Each suggestion links directly to a specific email, allowing users to review its content and context.
Google emphasizes that these new features aim to reduce information overload and simplify email management. AI Inbox complements existing Gemini capabilities in Gmail, including automatic summaries of lengthy threads and assistance with composing emails.
The company assures users that the AI features in Gmail are developed with privacy considerations in mind. Data from inboxes are not used to train the underlying AI models, and users have the option to disable AI tools in their settings. However, Google warns that AI systems can make mistakes, advising users to verify suggested actions.
With the rollout of AI Inbox, Google has also made several Gemini-based features available to all Gmail users, which were previously exclusive to paid Workspace plans. This includes the Help Me Write tool, enabling users to create or edit emails based on text prompts, as well as AI Overviews that automatically summarize lengthy email threads without scrolling through the entire history.
Furthermore, Gemini can now assist with searching for information in the inbox, responding to questions like "what is this email about" or "what needs to be done," and summarizing individual messages without manual commands. All these features are seamlessly integrated into the Gmail interface and operate in the background.
Meanwhile, advanced tools such as stylistic text editing, deep AI search across the entire inbox, and thematic overviews from multiple emails remain accessible only to subscribers of Google Pro and Ultra plans.
AI Inbox is currently being gradually rolled out and is in the beta testing phase.
