OpenAI has announced the rollout of a new group chat feature in ChatGPT, following its testing in several countries.
After trials in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, the company stated that the feature will soon be available to all users, regardless of their plan (Free, Go, Plus, or Pro).
This feature allows users to create group chats, inviting others via a link. Up to 20 participants can join the conversation. Users can join either with an existing ChatGPT account or by registering a new one. Participants can collaboratively formulate queries to ChatGPT and discuss each other’s responses.
OpenAI clarified that the content of group chats is not stored in ChatGPT’s memory. Any participant can remove another from the chat, except for the creator.
Previously, the company indicated that group chats in ChatGPT will utilize the GPT-5.1 Auto model, which automatically determines the best model to use based on the content of the query and the user's plan.
As a reminder, OpenAI recently introduced the new language model GPT-5.1 featuring two operational modes – Instant and Thinking. This update is aimed at enhancing the model's cognitive abilities, improving instruction execution, and expanding personality settings.
