Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, highlighted that the artificial intelligence industry is encountering significant issues in securing electricity for graphics processors. He shared his insights during a joint interview with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, as reported by Tom's Hardware.
"The primary challenge we face is not a lack of computational power, but rather an energy shortage. There is an urgent need to build new data centers quickly near energy sources. Otherwise, chips might remain idle because I can't connect them. This is my pressing issue today," said Nadella.
Similar difficulties are being experienced by NVIDIA. After overcoming a shortage of AI accelerators, the main focus has shifted to providing them with electricity. Numerous tech giants are investing in alternative energy sources, including nuclear power, to supply electricity to their data centers. This has already resulted in increased electricity bills for consumers in the United States.
Microsoft has signed a deal to revive a closed nuclear power plant worth $1.6 billion. Other companies are making similar moves. For instance, Meta has signed an agreement with XGS Energy to supply 150 MW of power from geothermal sources and procure energy from nuclear plants. AWS announced a $500 million investment in nuclear energy. Google has entered into a clean energy supply agreement, which will provide it with up to 3 gigawatts of electricity in the U.S. and has announced plans for its first nuclear reactor.
