PayPal has entered into a partnership with OpenAI to integrate its payment solution within ChatGPT. Starting next year, users will be able to make purchases effortlessly via the ChatGPT interface, while sellers will have the opportunity to showcase their products directly on this platform. This information was confirmed by PayPal's CEO, Alex Kriss, in a comment to CNBC.
According to him, millions of PayPal users will gain access to convenient and secure purchasing options by simply clicking the "Buy with PayPal" button in ChatGPT. Kriss referred to this as a "new shopping paradigm," where artificial intelligence acts as a personal assistant.
The agreement also includes consumer protection measures, such as package tracking and dispute resolution. Kriss emphasized that both buyers and sellers undergo verification through the fintech company, which reduces the risks of fraud. Users will be able to make payments using linked bank accounts, credit cards, or stored balances.
PayPal will also handle the technical aspects of the process — routing sellers, verifying payments, and other transaction processing details. This will enable sellers to operate through ChatGPT without needing separate registration with OpenAI.
PayPal is among the first partners of OpenAI, expanding the use of ChatGPT in e-commerce. Previously, OpenAI announced partnerships with Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart.
The company has also indicated plans to expand the use of OpenAI’s corporate products to optimize internal processes, particularly to accelerate the development of new services.
PayPal aims to become a key payment platform in the era of AI-driven shopping, as evidenced by its recent partnerships with Google and the AI company Perplexity.
It is worth noting that OpenAI is officially transitioning to a commercial basis. The non-profit part of the company is now called OpenAI Foundation and will oversee the profitable structure of OpenAI Group PBC. Meanwhile, the core mission of the company remains unchanged: to ensure that general artificial intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.
