OpenAI has announced a remarkable surge in ChatGPT's popularity, which is projected to hit 700 million active users this week, according to TechCrunch.

Vice President Nick Turley revealed that by the end of March, the number was 500 million, indicating a fourfold increase over the year. Turley emphasized that people and teams utilize ChatGPT daily for learning, creativity, and solving complex problems.

This rapid growth in popularity is attributed to the introduction of an updated image generation feature based on the GPT-4 model in March. This option quickly captivated users, leading to the creation of over 700 million images within days of its launch, with over 130 million individuals trying out the new capability.

The base of paid business users is also increasing: last week, COO Brad Lightcap reported 5 million subscribers, up from 3 million in June.

According to analytics firm Sensor Tower, the average ChatGPT user accesses the app over 12 times a month. This places it just behind Google and X in user engagement. In the first half of 2025, the average usage time stood at 16 minutes per day, indicating high audience involvement.

Thus, ChatGPT remains one of the most popular consumer AI services, as OpenAI continues to enhance its functionality and grow its user base.
