SpaceX has clarified that the recent major outage in the Starlink network was caused by a software update. According to the company, the procedure during the update of ground computing clusters led to an overload, resulting in the failure of core services. This is reported by PCMag.
The disruptions began on July 24 at approximately 10 PM Kyiv time and affected users worldwide, including Ukrainian military personnel. During peak hours, Starlink serves over 6 million customers globally. The majority managed to regain access to the network within 2.5 hours, but some subscribers reported connection issues extending into the next day. This was the longest outage in Starlink's operation since its launch.
After services were restored, some users noticed improvements in connection speeds — reaching 250 Mbps or higher, while previously average speeds were 110–150 Mbps. This has led to speculation that the update aimed to enhance network performance.
At the same time, other users are reporting ongoing issues with speed and stability. The Starlink support page currently recommends restarting equipment, including third-party devices.
