In one month, on August 25, 2025, Google will officially shut down the goo.gl link shortening service. The company first announced this intention back in July 2024. Instead of the content, users will encounter a 404 / Not Found error.
For a year, Google has displayed an interim page warning that short links would soon cease to function. If you visit goo.gl directly, you'll see a support page explaining the company's decision.
In 2019, Google had already stopped supporting the Google URL Shortener tool, but the previously generated links continued to work until 2024, when the company announced that they would be turned off, as more than 99% of those links were no longer in use.
This decision is justified by the significant changes in how people find content online in recent years, as well as the emergence of many new popular URL shortening services.
