Microsoft has announced that starting June 2025, its Authenticator app will no longer support password storage. Users will be prohibited from adding new passwords, and autofill functionality will be disabled from July. All saved passwords will be deleted in August, along with payment information.
However, passkeys will remain available for users, allowing them to securely log into services without the need to remember passwords.
For those staying within the Microsoft ecosystem, saved passwords can be accessed through the Microsoft Edge browser, which features its own password manager with autofill capabilities. Other users are advised to consider alternatives such as 1Password, LastPass, or Bitwarden, which are compatible across various platforms.
These changes are part of Microsoft's strategy to enhance security and transition to modern authentication methods that reduce the risks of password breaches. Passkeys supported in Authenticator are considered to be more secure and user-friendly.
Users are encouraged to export their passwords from Microsoft Authenticator to other managers in advance to avoid losing access to important accounts after August 2025.
